Pediatric Dentistry

Preventive, restorative and emergency dental care adapted to the needs of infants, children and adolescents.

Children's dental needs change as their teeth, jaws and oral habits develop. Pediatric dentistry provides age-appropriate prevention, diagnosis and treatment for infants, children and adolescents. At MID Dental Clinic in City Walk, Dubai, appointments are adapted to each child's age, health, previous experiences and ability to cooperate.

When should a child first visit the dentist?

Professional guidance recommends establishing a dental home when the first tooth appears and no later than approximately 12 months of age. An early visit allows the dentist to examine dental development, identify risk factors and help parents establish suitable brushing, fluoride and dietary routines.

A child's first appointment may be brief and primarily educational when there are no immediate concerns. Early, positive visits can help children become familiar with the dental environment before treatment is needed.

Preventive dental care for children

Prevention is personalised according to age and cavity risk. Care may include examinations, cleaning advice, diet guidance and existing services such as fluoride treatment and dental sealants. Dental X-rays are recommended only when the child's history, examination or treatment needs indicate that they would provide useful diagnostic information.

Treating dental problems in children

Primary teeth help children chew and speak and maintain space for developing permanent teeth. When decay or injury occurs, treatment is selected according to the tooth, extent of damage, symptoms and stage of dental development.

Options may include fillings, protective crowns, pulp therapy or extraction when a tooth cannot be maintained. If a primary tooth is lost earlier than expected, an existing space maintainer may be considered to help preserve room for the permanent tooth.

Supporting children during dental appointments

The dental team uses age-appropriate explanations, gradual familiarisation, positive reinforcement and other recognised behaviour-guidance methods. Parents should tell the clinic about previous dental anxiety, medical conditions, allergies, medications, developmental needs or communication requirements before the appointment.

Not every child requires the same behavioural or comfort approach. Any additional option is considered according to the child's health, treatment needs and ability to cooperate, with parental consent.

Dental emergencies and injuries

Children should receive prompt assessment after a dental injury, severe toothache, facial swelling or damage to a tooth. Management differs between primary and permanent teeth, so parents should contact the clinic rather than attempting treatment at home. For urgent concerns, visit the existing emergency dental care page.

Monitoring growth and dental development

Regular visits allow the dentist to monitor tooth eruption, oral hygiene, bite development, habits and cavity risk. When required, children may also be assessed for early orthodontic treatment. The frequency of appointments is personalised rather than determined by one fixed schedule for every child.

Common questions

Before your first visit.

The first visit is recommended when the first tooth appears and no later than approximately 12 months of age.

Primary teeth support chewing, speech and space for permanent teeth. Untreated disease may cause pain, infection and disruption to normal daily activities.

The schedule depends on the child's age, dental development, cavity risk and treatment needs. The dentist recommends an individual review interval after assessment.

Dental X-rays are requested only when clinically justified. The type and frequency are selected according to the child's individual diagnostic needs while limiting exposure.

Use calm, positive language and avoid frightening words or promises about what will happen. Tell the clinic about your child's concerns so the appointment can be adapted.

Contact a dental clinic promptly and explain whether the tooth is primary or permanent. Keep any broken tooth fragments and avoid attempting to reinsert a knocked-out primary tooth.
