What are dental sealants?

Dental sealants are thin protective coatings applied to suitable grooves and pits on the chewing surfaces of back teeth. These areas can retain food and plaque and may be difficult to clean effectively with a toothbrush.

Sealants create a smoother protective surface that can help reduce the risk of decay. Suitability is determined after examining the tooth and checking for existing cavities.

Who may benefit?

Sealants are commonly considered for newly erupted permanent molars, but they may also be suitable for other teeth or adult patients with deep grooves and an increased risk of decay.

How are sealants applied?

1. The tooth is examined and cleaned.
2. The chewing surface is prepared and kept dry.
3. The sealant material is placed into the suitable grooves.
4. The material is hardened and the bite is checked.

The procedure does not normally require drilling when the tooth is free from decay requiring treatment.

How long do sealants last?

Sealants can remain protective for several years, but they may wear, chip or become partially lost. They should be checked during regular dental examinations and repaired or replaced when appropriate.

Do sealants replace brushing?

No. Sealants only protect the areas they cover. Brushing with fluoride toothpaste, interdental cleaning, a balanced diet and professional preventive care remain necessary. Fluoride treatment may also be recommended for suitable patients.
