Molar-incisor hypomineralisation, commonly called MIH, is a developmental enamel defect that frequently affects one or more first permanent molars and may also affect permanent incisors. The enamel may appear white, cream, yellow or brown and can be weaker than normally formed enamel.

What problems can MIH cause?

Affected teeth may be sensitive to cold, brushing or dental treatment. Weakened enamel can break down after eruption and may make the tooth more vulnerable to decay or restoration failure. Severity varies considerably between children and between different teeth in the same child.

How is MIH managed?

Treatment depends on sensitivity, enamel strength, tooth breakdown, cavity risk and the child's ability to cooperate. Options may include desensitising care, professional fluoride treatment, dental sealants, fillings or protective crowns.
