Falls, sports and everyday accidents can fracture, loosen, displace or knock out a child's tooth. Prompt assessment is important because treatment differs between primary and permanent teeth and may be time-sensitive.
What should parents do immediately?
Contact a dental clinic and describe the child's age, symptoms and injury. Keep any broken tooth fragments and transport them in milk or saline when available. Do not attempt to reinsert a knocked-out primary tooth.
For a knocked-out permanent tooth, handle it by the crown rather than the root. If immediate reinsertion is not possible or appropriate, keep it moist in milk or a suitable tooth-preservation solution and seek urgent dental care.
How are injuries treated?
The dentist examines the teeth, gums, bite and surrounding tissues. Dental X-rays may be required. Treatment can include smoothing or restoring a fracture, repositioning and stabilising a displaced permanent tooth, protecting the pulp or monitoring dental development.
Some complications appear later, so follow-up is important even when symptoms improve. Use the existing emergency dental care service for urgent assessment.
When is medical emergency care required?
Seek urgent medical attention for loss of consciousness, breathing difficulty, uncontrolled bleeding, suspected jaw fracture or other significant head injury.
