Crown lengthening reshapes the gum tissue and, when clinically required, a small amount of supporting bone to expose more of the natural tooth. It may be performed to make restorative treatment possible or to adjust an uneven gum-to-tooth proportion.

Restorative crown lengthening

A tooth may have decay, a fracture or an existing restoration extending below the gumline. Crown lengthening can expose sufficient sound tooth structure so that a filling or dental crown can be placed appropriately.

Aesthetic crown lengthening

In selected cases, the procedure may expose more of naturally short-looking teeth and improve gum-line balance. It differs from simple gum contouring because crown lengthening may also involve adjustment of the supporting bone.

Procedure and recovery

The area is treated under local anaesthesia. Gum tissue is repositioned, and bone is adjusted only when required by the treatment plan. Temporary tenderness, swelling and sensitivity may occur during healing.

The timing of a final restoration depends on the treated area and healing response. A clinical assessment is required to determine whether crown lengthening is appropriate and how much healing time should be allowed.
