What are metal-free dental crowns?

A dental crown is a custom-made restoration that covers the visible portion of a tooth. Metal-free crowns are produced using tooth-coloured ceramic materials rather than a metal inner framework.

They may be used to restore strength, shape, function and appearance when a tooth has been significantly damaged or cannot be predictably restored with a smaller filling or bonding procedure.

When might a dental crown be recommended?

A metal-free crown may be considered for:

What materials are used?

What happens during crown treatment?

1. Assessment: The tooth, gums and bite are examined, and X-rays may be recommended.

3. Impression or scan: Accurate records are taken to fabricate the customised restoration.
4. Temporary crown: A temporary restoration may protect the tooth while the final crown is being prepared.

6. Cementation: The crown is secured when its fit and function are considered satisfactory.

Crown, veneer or composite bonding?

A crown covers most or all of the visible tooth and is generally used when greater structural protection is needed. A porcelain veneer mainly covers the front surface and may be considered for selected cosmetic concerns.

Composite bonding adds resin directly to suitable areas and generally requires less tooth preparation. The most conservative predictable option should be selected after examination.

How long do metal-free crowns last?

Dental crowns are long-term restorations, but they are not guaranteed to last for life. Longevity depends on material, tooth condition, bite forces, grinding, oral hygiene, diet and regular maintenance.

A crown may eventually chip, loosen, wear or require replacement. The tooth beneath it can also develop decay or gum problems if plaque accumulates around the crown margin.

How should a crown be maintained?

• Brush twice daily using fluoride toothpaste.
• Clean carefully around and between crowned teeth every day.
• Attend regular dental examinations and professional cleaning.
• Avoid biting hard objects or using teeth to open packaging.
• Wear a night guard if recommended for grinding or clenching.
• Seek an assessment if the crown becomes loose or uncomfortable.

Risks and limitations

Crown preparation is irreversible because part of the tooth must be shaped. Temporary sensitivity, gum irritation, bite discomfort, ceramic chipping, loosening or decay around the crown margin may occur.
