Tooth Contouring
Conservative tooth contouring in Dubai to improve suitable uneven edges, minor chips and small differences in tooth shape.
What is tooth contouring?
Tooth contouring, also known as enameloplasty or dental reshaping, is a conservative procedure that removes a very small amount of enamel to improve suitable tooth edges, shape or symmetry.
At MID Clinic in City Walk, Dubai, the dentist evaluates enamel thickness, tooth structure and bite before recommending reshaping. Because removed enamel cannot grow back, the procedure must remain within safe clinical limits.
What can tooth contouring improve?
Dental reshaping may help with:
- Slightly uneven front-tooth edges
- Very small chips in enamel
- Minor differences in tooth length
- Sharp or irregular enamel corners
- Small areas that affect smile symmetry
- Finishing adjustments after selected dental treatments
Tooth contouring cannot correct large fractures, severe wear, significant misalignment or major differences in tooth size. These concerns may require composite bonding, veneers, orthodontics or restorative treatment.
Who may be suitable?
Suitable candidates need sufficient healthy enamel and minor concerns that can be improved without weakening the tooth. The dentist examines the tooth surface, bite and proximity of the sensitive inner tooth structure.
Contouring may not be appropriate for thin enamel, active decay, cracks, significant sensitivity or extensive tooth wear. Oral health problems should be treated first.
What happens during tooth contouring?
- Assessment: The dentist examines the teeth, enamel and bite.
- Planning: The areas requiring adjustment are identified and the expected limitations are explained.
- Reshaping: A small amount of enamel is carefully adjusted using appropriate dental instruments.
- Polishing: The treated surfaces are smoothed and polished.
- Bite check: The dentist confirms that the adjusted teeth meet comfortably.
Anaesthesia is often unnecessary because enamel does not contain nerves, but individual treatment requirements vary.
Tooth contouring or composite bonding?
Contouring removes a small amount of enamel to reduce or smooth selected areas. Composite bonding adds tooth-coloured material to repair chips, increase tooth length, close suitable gaps or change shape.
In some cases, the two procedures may be combined. The appropriate option depends on whether tooth structure needs to be carefully reduced, added or both.
Are the results permanent?
The shape change is permanent because removed enamel does not grow back. However, natural wear, grinding, chipping or future dental treatment can change the appearance over time.
Risks and limitations
Removing too much enamel can increase sensitivity, weaken the tooth or affect the bite. Tooth contouring should therefore only be performed after evaluating enamel thickness and tooth position.
The procedure produces subtle changes and is not intended for major smile transformations. Patients seeking changes to several teeth may consider a smile makeover consultation.
