Surgical extraction is used when a tooth cannot be removed predictably through routine extraction. This may apply to impacted teeth, teeth broken near the gumline, retained roots or teeth with complex root anatomy.

Planning the procedure

The tooth, surrounding bone and nearby structures are evaluated clinically and with appropriate imaging. Three-dimensional imaging may be recommended when greater anatomical detail is required. Medical conditions and medications are reviewed before treatment.

What does surgical extraction involve?

After local anaesthesia, a small opening may be made in the gum to access the tooth. A limited amount of surrounding bone may be removed, or the tooth may be divided into sections to allow controlled removal. The area is cleaned and may be closed with sutures.

Recovery and possible risks

Swelling, tenderness, bruising, limited mouth opening or minor bleeding may occur temporarily. Recognised risks vary by tooth position and may include infection, dry socket, delayed healing or injury to nearby structures. Your dentist will explain risks relevant to your case before treatment.
