An impacted tooth remains partly or completely beneath the gum or bone instead of erupting into its expected position. Upper canine teeth are commonly affected, although other teeth can also become impacted.

Assessment and coordinated planning

Treatment is planned using a clinical examination and dental imaging to evaluate the tooth's position, available space, root development and relationship to neighbouring teeth. A coordinated orthodontic assessment is usually required before surgical exposure.

What happens during the procedure?

After local anaesthesia, a small opening is created in the gum to expose the impacted tooth. When planned with the orthodontic clinician, a small attachment may be bonded to the tooth so gentle orthodontic forces can guide it gradually into position.

The procedure does not move the tooth immediately. Movement takes place during subsequent orthodontic treatment and depends on the tooth's position, available space and biological response.

Recovery and follow-up

Temporary tenderness, swelling or minor bleeding may occur. Patients receive instructions for cleaning and protecting the area. Follow-up is coordinated with the orthodontic plan to monitor healing and begin or continue tooth movement at the appropriate time.
