Sinus Lift for Dental Implants

Sinus-lift assessment and treatment in Dubai for selected upper-back-jaw implant cases with limited bone beneath the sinus.

What Is a Sinus Lift?

A sinus lift, also called sinus augmentation, is a bone-grafting procedure used in selected areas of the upper back jaw. It creates additional space for graft material beneath the sinus membrane when the existing bone height is insufficient for the planned dental implant.

Not every upper-jaw implant requires a sinus lift. The need depends on bone height and width, sinus anatomy, implant dimensions and the complete restorative plan.

Assessment Before Sinus Augmentation

Three-dimensional imaging is commonly used to assess the bone and sinus region. The dentist reviews sinus symptoms, previous sinus treatment, medications, smoking and general health. Active dental infection or relevant sinus disease may require assessment or treatment before surgery.

Sinus-Lift Approaches

Two broad approaches may be considered. A crestal or internal approach accesses the sinus through the planned implant site and is generally used for smaller increases in height. A lateral-window approach accesses the sinus from the side of the upper jaw and may be selected when more augmentation is required.

The sinus membrane is carefully elevated and graft material is placed beneath it. Implants may be inserted at the same appointment when adequate initial stability is achievable, or after the graft has healed in a staged approach.

Healing and Possible Risks

Healing commonly takes several months. Possible complications include pain, swelling, bruising, bleeding, infection, sinus symptoms, membrane perforation, graft exposure, insufficient bone formation and the need for additional treatment.

Follow instructions regarding medicines, oral hygiene, diet and activity. Avoid smoking. Patients may be advised temporarily to avoid forceful nose blowing and activities that create sinus pressure; follow the instructions provided for your specific case.

When to Contact the Clinic

Contact the clinic if bleeding does not settle, swelling or pain worsens unexpectedly, fever develops, fluid passes between the mouth and nose or concerning sinus symptoms occur.

Common questions

Questions about this treatment.

It may be considered when there is insufficient bone height beneath the sinus to support the planned implant in the upper back jaw.

No. It is required only in selected cases based on bone dimensions, sinus anatomy and the planned implant and restoration.

Sometimes. Simultaneous placement depends on the available bone and whether suitable initial implant stability can be achieved.

Healing generally takes several months, but timing varies with the surgical approach, graft size, health, smoking and individual response.

Possible risks include infection, bleeding, sinus symptoms, membrane perforation, graft complications, insufficient bone formation and additional surgery.
