Periodontal maintenance in Dubai
Periodontal maintenance is ongoing care provided after treatment for periodontitis. Its purpose is to monitor gum health, remove recurring deposits and identify signs of renewed disease activity before further damage develops.
How is it different from routine cleaning?
Routine cleaning is generally preventive care for patients without a history of periodontitis. Periodontal maintenance is designed for patients who have received treatment for loss of periodontal attachment or supporting bone. It may include cleaning above and below the gumline, reassessing periodontal pockets and reviewing areas that remain difficult to maintain.
What happens during an appointment?
The dentist reviews changes in health and risk factors, examines the gums and checks for bleeding, inflammation or deeper pockets. Plaque and calculus are removed from the areas requiring care. Home-cleaning techniques may be adjusted according to current findings.
How often is maintenance needed?
The interval is personalised. Some patients may be advised to attend more frequently than patients receiving routine preventive cleaning. The schedule depends on disease severity, remaining pocket depths, smoking, diabetes, plaque control and previous response to treatment.
Maintenance cannot guarantee that periodontitis will never progress, but regular monitoring and daily oral hygiene are central to long-term disease control.
