An oral biopsy removes a small sample of tissue from an area inside the mouth so it can be examined under a microscope. It may be recommended when a lesion cannot be diagnosed confidently through clinical examination alone.

When might a biopsy be recommended?

Assessment may be required for an ulcer that does not heal, an unexplained lump, persistent red or white patch, unusual tissue change or another lesion with uncertain features. Most oral changes are not cancer, but persistent or suspicious findings should be evaluated rather than ignored.

What happens during the procedure?

After appropriate anaesthesia, part or all of the selected lesion is removed depending on its size, location and clinical appearance. The tissue is sent to a pathology laboratory for examination. Sutures may be placed when necessary.

Results and next steps

The laboratory report helps establish a diagnosis and guide further care. Turnaround time depends on the laboratory and whether additional testing is required. The dentist explains the result and whether monitoring, further removal, treatment or referral is recommended.
