Dry Socket Treatment
Assessment and local care for worsening extraction-site pain associated with a dry socket.
Dry socket treatment in Dubai
Dry socket, also called alveolar osteitis, can develop after tooth extraction when the protective blood clot is lost or breaks down before the socket has healed. It commonly causes increasing or severe pain several days after extraction and may be associated with an unpleasant taste or smell.
How is dry socket diagnosed?
The dentist examines the extraction site and reviews the pattern of symptoms. An X-ray may be recommended when a retained fragment, neighbouring tooth problem or another cause of pain needs to be excluded.
What does treatment involve?
The socket may be gently cleaned to remove trapped debris. A soothing medicated dressing may be placed when appropriate, and pain-management guidance is provided. Dressings may need to be changed depending on symptoms and the material used.
Dry socket is not automatically a bacterial infection, so antibiotics are not required in every case. They are considered only when clinical signs indicate an infection or another reason for prescribing them.
When should you contact the clinic?
Arrange an assessment if pain becomes stronger rather than improving after an extraction, especially when standard pain relief is not controlling it. Seek urgent medical attention for difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly spreading swelling or other severe symptoms.
