The crown, bridge or denture attached to dental implants can experience wear, loosening, chipping or component damage. Assessment determines whether the problem involves the visible prosthesis, its connecting components, the implant itself or the surrounding tissues.
What signs require evaluation?
Arrange an assessment if an implant crown or bridge moves, the bite feels different, material has chipped, a removable implant denture no longer attaches securely or cleaning has become difficult. Do not attempt to tighten or repair implant components at home.
How is the problem diagnosed?
The dentist examines the restoration, bite, implant stability and surrounding gums. Dental X-rays may be recommended to assess the implant and supporting bone. The prosthesis may need to be removed when clinically possible to inspect screws or connecting components.
Repair or replacement options
Treatment may include adjusting the bite, replacing a screw, repairing selected material or remaking part or all of the prosthesis. Repair depends on the design, damage and availability of compatible implant components.
Bleeding, swelling, discharge or bone loss around an implant may require separate peri-implant disease treatment. Prosthetic repair alone does not treat inflammation affecting the supporting tissues.
