Bone Grafting for Dental Implants
Bone-grafting assessment and treatment in Dubai to rebuild selected areas of the jaw before or during dental implant placement.
Why Might Bone Grafting Be Needed?
Dental implants require suitable bone support. Bone volume can reduce after tooth loss, gum disease, infection, injury or previous surgery. Bone grafting adds graft material to a selected area to encourage the formation and preservation of supporting bone.
Not every implant patient needs grafting. The decision is based on examination and imaging, the proposed implant position and the amount and shape of existing bone.
Types of Implant Bone Grafting
Depending on the defect, treatment may involve socket preservation after tooth removal, a small graft around an implant, ridge augmentation or a more extensive staged procedure. Graft material may come from the patient, a processed human or animal source, or a synthetic substitute. The source, benefits, limitations and alternatives should be explained before consent.
Assessment and Procedure
The dentist may use three-dimensional imaging to evaluate bone dimensions and nearby anatomical structures. During treatment, the area is numbed, graft material is placed and a protective membrane may be used before the gum is closed with sutures.
Small grafts may sometimes be completed during implant placement. Larger grafts commonly require healing before implants can be placed. The sequence depends on graft stability, the size of the defect and the treatment plan.
Healing and Possible Risks
Initial gum healing occurs before the graft completes its longer biological healing phase. Possible risks include pain, swelling, bruising, infection, wound opening, graft-material exposure, altered sensation and insufficient new bone formation. Additional treatment may sometimes be required.
Smoking and poor plaque control can interfere with healing. Follow all instructions concerning cleaning, diet, prescribed medicines and activity. Do not disturb the surgical site.
Aftercare
Attend the scheduled review and suture-removal appointments. Contact the clinic if bleeding does not settle, swelling worsens after the expected early period, fever develops or graft particles and the wound become concerning.
