Bad Breath Assessment and Treatment
Dental assessment for persistent bad breath in Dubai to identify possible oral causes and recommend suitable care.
What causes persistent bad breath?
Persistent bad breath, also called halitosis, can be associated with plaque accumulation, gum inflammation, tongue coating, dry mouth, tooth decay, dental infection, smoking or food-related factors.
Some cases may have a non-dental cause. A clinical assessment helps identify whether treatment should begin with dental care or whether medical evaluation may be appropriate.
What happens during assessment?
- Your symptoms, habits, medications and medical history are reviewed.
- The teeth, gums, tongue and visible oral tissues are examined.
- Plaque, calculus, decay, dry mouth and possible infection are assessed.
- Dental X-rays may be recommended when clinically necessary.
- A suitable care plan or referral is discussed.
How is bad breath managed?
Treatment depends on the cause. Recommendations may include improved brushing and tongue cleaning, daily interdental cleaning, hydration, management of dry mouth, repairing decay, treating gum disease or completing professional teeth cleaning.
A gum assessment may be recommended when bleeding, swelling or periodontal pockets are present.
When might medical assessment be needed?
If no significant oral cause is identified, the dentist may recommend speaking with an appropriate medical professional. Mouthwash can temporarily mask odour but may not address its underlying cause.
