Thumb-Sucking and Pacifier Habit Assessment
Assessment and supportive guidance for oral habits that may influence developing teeth, jaws or bite.
Oral habit assessment for children in Dubai
Thumb-sucking and pacifier use are common soothing behaviours during early childhood. Their effect on dental development depends on how frequently, forcefully and how long the habit continues.
When should the habit be assessed?
An assessment may be helpful when a habit continues as the permanent teeth begin developing, appears to change the bite or tooth position, or causes concern for the child or family. The dentist examines the teeth, palate, jaws and bite and considers the child's age and readiness for change.
Supportive habit guidance
Management should be encouraging rather than punitive. Recommendations may include identifying triggers, positive reinforcement, reminders and gradual reduction. Parents should avoid criticism or punishment, which can increase stress without resolving the habit.
Will orthodontic treatment be needed?
Some dental changes improve after the habit stops, particularly when it ends early. Persistent bite or jaw-development concerns may require an early orthodontic assessment.
An oral appliance is not required for every child. It may be considered only when simpler approaches have not worked and the child is developmentally ready.
